Calgary Pediatric Acupuncture
Acupuncture has shown to be an effective treatment for various pediatric conditions and can be a safe and comfortable treatment option for children. Acupuncture can provide relief from pain, promote relaxation, and improve overall well-being in kids. Dr. Robin specializes in working with pediatrics and providing a fun, comfortable and effective treatment!
The specific approach to acupuncture for kids can differ from that of adults. Dr. Robin takes into account your child's age, size, and developmental stage to determine the appropriate treatment approach. Typically for children, especially ones that won’t sit still, the needle is inserted and removed immediately.
If your child is hesitant to have acupuncture, needle-free techniques like acupressure or microcurrent stimulation may be used to provide stimulation to the acupuncture points. The comfort level of the child is always taken into consideration.
Acupuncture has been found beneficial in addressing various pediatric conditions such as:
Allergies
Weakened Immune Systems (colds, flus and more!)
Anxiety and stress
Mood Swings
Insomnia
Digestion troubles (IBS, celiac)
Hormonal changes (painful periods, PMS)
Frequently Asked Questions
-
Absolutely not! Children are generally treated over the clothes, unless in rare cases where access to the skin is necessary. If this is the case, consent is gained from both the child and guardian and the youth will be tucked under blankets and only the areas treated will be exposed (ex: shoulders, legs).

No! Dr. Robin likes to introduce acupuncture with acupressure if the child is hesitant! If they feel comfortable at follow up treatments, then she will move to acupuncture. But you’d be surprised, many children love acupuncture and find they don’t notice the needles going in!
-
Unfortunately NO! Treating pediatrics takes additional training in communication, treatment, pathology and ethics. Children are far more mobile, bones can be more fragile and they may take a bit longer to understand what will be going on during a treatment - so special care needs to be taken.
The current curriculums for both programs in Canada do not dive deep enough into treating children for us to consider it safe for the average therapist to offer pediatric treatments. Often times, we see pediatric patients for their first massage or acupuncture treatment - and we take great care to ensure that they look forward to coming back and will continue to care for themselves into adulthood!
